CFR 45 - Sundre's Helmeczi Wins Novice Bareback Title, Schiffner's Final CFR Bull Ride

This was the last Canadian Finals Rodeo for 2 time national champ, Scott Schiffner. The 38 year old from Strathmore is retiring and he nearly stayed on for the full 8 seconds in his final CFR bull ride on Sunday, November 4th in front of an appreciative crowd at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer.

The 2018 champions were brought out for one final curtain call at the end of Sunday's action to wrap up CFR 45 in Red Deer.

That included Sundre's Mason Helmeczi - the 2018 Canadian Finals Rodeo champ in novice bareback.

The 20 year old is on the rodeo team in Snider, Texas at Western Texas College.

Helmeczi says he is originally from Esterhazy, Saskatchewan but has spent the past couple summers out in Sundre.

He won 2 of the 3 go rounds at CFR 45 in novice bareback and took home more than $12,000 dollars in total earnings.

Helmeczi enjoyed being part of two big wins for the town of Sundre during the CFR 45 excitement in Red Deer.

Shane Crouch - President of the Sundre Pro Rodeo - was named the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association's 2018 Committee Person of the Year during the annual night of champions ahead of the CFR on Monday, October 29th. The Sundre Pro Rodeo will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2019.

The novice saddle bronc champion for this year is Wildwood's Cooper Thatcher and Yellowhead County's Tristen Manning claimed the steer riding title.

The fans at CFR 45 got to see one of the greatest of all-time make the final bull ride of his career on Sunday, November 4th at the Enmax Centrium.

Scott Schiffner from Strathmore came oh so close to making it the full 8 seconds and earning a score, but instead he wound up getting bucked off one last time at the CFR.

Schiffner felt fortunate to get one last chance at CFR 45 in Red Deer before he retired. He appeared at the CFR in Edmonton 18 times during his career - 17 in bull riding and one in steer riding.

In a great show of respect, all of the other bull riders took a moment afterwards to shake hands with Schiffner.

The 38 year old Schiffner finished second in both round 2 and round 5 at CFR 45. He wound up 4th in the aggregate and 6th in total earnings this season.

Schiffner won CFR bull riding titles in 2001 and 2012.
