A 29 year old man from the Carstairs area is facing charges related to unsafe use & storage of a firearm. He will undergo a mental health assessment following a standoff with police last night.
Shortly after 5:15pm yesterday, Mounties were advised that a 29 year old male from the Carstairs area had departed a residence in Carstairs and was suspected of driving impaired while in possession of a firearm.
Further reports were called in after 7pm related to a suspicious vehicle matching the description of suspect's vehicle parked along township road 304 east of highway 2A.
Citizens stated a male was observed laying outside the vehicle with a long barreled firearm beside him.
According to police, the scene was secured but the male would not cooperate with directions to surrender himself.
Just before 10pm the male attempted to flee the area on foot, he was subsequently apprehended by RCMP.
The male suffered minor injuries from the police dog deployment and was provided treatment in hospital.
An unloaded rifle was located in the suspect's vehicle - he faces charges related to unsafe use and storage of a firearm, and will undergo a mental health assessment.
Sergeant Jeff Jacobsen with the Didsbury Detachment says 'Alcohol and firearms are a dangerous mix. Police are pleased that the situation resolved without further escalation and at the end of the day everyone was safe'.
