Innisfail Merchants Claim 3rd Provincial Title, Heading To Westerns Again

The Innisfail Merchants are once again heading to the Western Canada Baseball Championships. The Merchants booked their ticket to the 2019 edition of Westerns by winning the provincial gold medal game last weekend by the score of 5-3 over the St. Albert Cardinals in Edmonton. It is the third Baseball Alberta provincial junior AAA championship for Innisfail.

The Innisfail Merchants have won their second consecutive junior AAA provincial championship.

A total of 4 teams were part of the Baseball Alberta provincials in Edmonton at Wally Footz Field last weekend.

According to General Manager Des Bouteiller, the Merchants went 2 and 1 in round robin play and then they defeated the St. Albert Cardinals 5-3 to win the gold medal game.

He says pitching and defence were the keys to victory for Innisfail at provincials.

Des notes that a couple of players from the town of Olds were very important pieces for the Merchants this season and in the provincial final.

Jack Henley from Olds tossed a complete game to help the Merchants win the final against St. Albert.

Meanwhile, Bouteiller was also excited to see the Innisfail Hawks win the U-13 AA provincial banner.

Bouteiller adds Innisfail now advances to Westerns in Saskatoon.

Innisfail hopes that the 8th time is the charm at the Western Canada Baseball Championships. The Merchants have brought back medals twice in 7 previous trips - but both times those medals were silver.

Des says the Merchants will head to Saskatchewan on Thursday, August 8th and their first game at Westerns is on Friday, August 9th at 1pm versus the host team - the Saskatoon Hoppers.

The St. Albert Cardinals along with two teams from Manitoba - the Elm Wood Giants and the Interlake Blue Jays - are also participating in the tourney.
