Local MLA Reacts To AHS Spending Scandal

Tuesday, August 7th 2012 07:00

It became public last week that former Alberta Health Services CFO Allaudin Merali racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal expenses. MLA Bruce Rowe says clear accountability measures & controls need to be put in place.

Alberta Health Services' Chief Financial Officer Allaudin Merali as well as Board President Sheila Weatherill both stepped down from their posts last week as a spending scandal became public.

Merali has been accused of racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses including pricey restaurant bills & car repairs.

Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills MLA Bruce Rowe describes his reaction to the scandal.

Rowe talks about what he thinks needs to be done to correct the ongoing problems that seem to plague the AHS board.

Health Minister Fred Horne has announced that he's ordered Alberta Health Services to hire an independent firm to conduct a forensic audit of Merali's expenses.

Yesterday it was also revealed that Merali - who stepped down last Wednesday - will not be receiving a severance package.
