Olds College Receives Land Donation Valued At More Than $1 Million Dollars

An incredible gift of 316 acres of agricultural land in Mountain View County has been given to Olds College by the Pitstra family.

Olds College received a land donation worth $1.2 million dollars this week.

The property is located west of Carstairs.

Olds College's Vice President of Development & Strategy Patrick Machacek thanks the Pitstra family.

He says the land will be converted to expand the Smart Farm and applied research at Olds College.

The land is very important to Olds College and it plays a key part in delivering hands-on training, according to Machacek.

Machacek adds, the Smart Farm teaches students the newest innovations that are coming on stream in the agriculture sector.

He adds Willem and Marrigje (Mar) Pitstra do not specifically have history with Olds College, but it goes to show how ag training is valued across the province and they wanted to impact the next generation of students.

According to Olds College, Willem and Marrigjie immigrated to Canada as young adults from Holland. Growing up during the Second World War and the occupation of Holland, educational opportunities were limited. As a result, the Pitstra's deeply valued education and it was of high importance during the upbringing of their three children.
