Olds RCMP say vehicle theft from the start of the year through the month of August is up by 21% in the town of Olds as compared to the same time period in 2018.
Olds RCMP are advising the public of a recent increase in the detachment area in regards to motor vehicle thefts.
Police say since August there have been 18 vehicles stolen in the area - 13 in the town of Olds and 5 in Mountain View County.
All those vehicles, with the exception of two, were pick up trucks. The vehicles were of all makes and were across numerous years of manufacture.
The town of Olds has seen 51 vehicles stolen from start of the year until the end of August. During the same time period in 2018, there were 42 vehicles stolen. This is a 21% increase.
Of note, Olds RCMP did see a decrease in each month from January to June compared the year prior; whereas, July and August had increases.
The rural area of the Olds RCMP detachment has seen an overall 23% decrease to the end of August this year compared to last. There was an increase from 4 vehicles stolen in August of 2018 to 5 in 2019.
Police are reminding the public to lock vehicles, remove contents and keys when vehicles are left unattended.
