A provincial rubgy medal has been won for the first time ever by the senior girls from Olds High School. They finished 3rd in the inaugural ASAA rugby 7s provincial tournament over the May 31st-June 1st weekend in Edmonton. Spartans Head Coach George Grant says in his 21 years as coach, the rugby 15s from OHS had been to provincials 3 times - and each time they had finished in 5th place.
For the first time ever, a rugby team from Olds High School has earned a provincial medal.
Spartans Head Coach George says this is his 21st year of leading the rugby program at OHS.
The Spartan senior girls wound up winning 3 of their 4 games in Edmonton as they claimed the ASAA bronze medal during the rugby 7s Tier 2 provincial tournament.
Coach Grant says they defeated Sturgeon 17-5 in the 3rd place game.
He most definitely believes the rugby 7s turned out to be a very successful tourney for the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association.
Coach Grant notes rugby 7s is a much more wide open game than the 15s, but the Spartans learned quickly and got better with each game they played.
OHS started the rugby 7s girls provincial tourney with a 15-5 win over Sturgeon and a 25-10 victory against Thorsby on Friday, May 31st.
The Spartans fell 24-10 to Harry Collinge in the semi-finals on Saturday, June 1st before beating Sturgeon again to win the bronze medal.
