Mayor Michael Muzychka says a dignitary from the city of Red Deer recognized the amazing efforts of the town.

He says the MNP Torch Relay stop in Olds was a great opportunity to encorporate all 19 sports that will be part of the Canada Winter Games into a full day of activities.

According to town officials, it is estimated that about 2000 people attened the events at the CLC, SportsComplex, Aquatic Centre and the Olds Gymnastics Club. 250 volunteer bags were handed out and over 800 hot dogs were served.

The Mayor was also one of the 10 local torchbearers selected to carried the Roly McLenahan Torch through town and into the SportsComplex.

When he was 17, Mayor Muzychka had the chance to carry the torch for the World University Games through Olds on its way to Edmonton back in 1983.

Mayor Muzychka is definitely an interested observer and says he will be going up to Red Deer later this month to watch the Canada Winter Games.

The local ice dance tandem of Kobi Chant from Olds and Savanna Martel from Airdrie performed their routine at the SportsComplex after the torch race ceremony on Thursday evening. They will be competing at the 2019 Canada Winter Games on Monday, February 25th and Wednesday, February 27th. Their skate as part of the CWG torch ceremony was followed by demonstrations from the Olds Figure Skating Club as well as the Calgary Speed Skating Club.
