Olds, Alberta ~ On Saturday March 14th, shortly after 8:00 AM, the Olds RCMP and Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in the back alley of the 5300 block of 44th Street in Olds.

The complainant reported seeing his neighbour's detached garage on fire when he went outside to shovel. The fire on the garage was still active upon Fire Department arrival but was quickly contained. The fire damage was relatively minor but had potential for a much greater loss. The scene investigation revealed that recyclable materials taken from a nearby bin were used to help ignite the fire. A charred T-shirt was also located in the vicinity which appears to have been used to attempt to ignite a fence.

This is the fourth fire set in the same general area and in a similar manner as the incidents previously investigated on February 1st, February 11th, and March 2nd. In addition to the collection of scene evidence, making neighbourhood inquiries and interviewing persons of interest, the Olds RCMP is also utilizing the services of specialized units to assist in the attempt to apprehend the person or persons responsible. S/Sgt. MacDonald said "The person who is lighting these fires may not realize that, if the fire spreads and a life is lost, he or she is facing murder-related charges and a very long time in prison".
