The town of Didsbury and the Didsbury Municipal Library are planning for the future expansion of the library facility. Mayor Rhonda Hunter says town council and the Library Board are united in the common goal of creating more space to accomodate increased usership and programs. She adds, they are excited to finally be exploring the prospect of what might become the approved expansion.
DIDSBURY ~ It is with great excitement that Didsbury Town Council and the Didsbury Municipal Library Board announce plans for the future expansion of the library facility in our community.
After considering a number of different strategies for a larger library in Didsbury, both groups agree that the initial intent to expand the Didsbury Municipal Library into the former Town Office space makes the most sense. Maintaining the library’s current prime location in Didsbury’s downtown core is very desirable, and the financial savings that will be realized through repurposing an existing building are critical in today’s economic climate.
In the coming weeks, a Request for Proposals (RFP) will be issued to invite interested parties to submit a project proposal that will utilize the existing library space, as well as the old Town Office facility, essentially doubling the footprint of the existing library.
“Council is looking forward to this RFP process getting started, exploring the potential for library expansion,” said Mayor Rhonda Hunter. “The creation of a bigger space for our very busy and popular municipal library has been a Council priority since late 2017. After reviewing a variety of scenarios and having many discussions, many with the Didsbury Library Board, it is exciting we are at the point where we will be getting concrete information regarding an opportunity to expand into the previous Town Office.”
Mayor Hunter says that Town Council and the Library Board are united in this common goal of creating more space to accommodate increased usership and programs, and are excited to finally be exploring the prospect of what might become the approved expansion.
Didsbury Library Board Chair Carolyn Massel says the Board echoes the Town’s enthusiasm for the project.
“We are very excited to be moving forward with a library expansion,” said Massel. “The demand for library services continues to substantially increase and our library is definitely evidence of this global trend. More space will mean an increase in the programs and services that our library can provide for the citizens of Didsbury and area. We are very appreciative of the Town’s efforts on our behalf.”
